NEWS FROM THE LAFDK

  • Apply until 1st of March 2025

TanzDialoge is a platform for artistic debate and exchange between dance professionals of the independent scene, initiated by the Network Tanzinitiative of Landesverband freie darstellende Künste Bremen. Since 2020, the TanzDialoge have taken place annually with a changing focus. The TanzDialoge bring together artists who have never worked together before. This leads to new encounters and synergy effects in Bremen's dance and art scene. Different backgrounds and diverse dance languages are confronted and explored. Within a week of rehearsals, 10-minute dance pieces are created.
In 2025, the focus is on interdisciplinary collaboration between dancers and audio artists, continuing the cross-disciplinary orientation of previous TanzDialoge editions. In this interdisciplinary edition, dancers, choreographers, musicians, sound artists, or composers can come together to jointly develop new forms of artistic expression. Here, music is not merely considered an accompaniment to dance but an equal dialogue partner in the creative process.

    Dates
    03.11. – 07.11.25: Rehearsals in Bremen
07.11.25: Dress rehearsal at Schaulust (Bremen)
    08. and 09.11.25: Performances at Schaulust (Bremen)

    Framework Conditions
One or two dance artists and one audio artist, who have not worked together before, will come together to create a roughly ten-minute piece over five rehearsal days. TanzDialoge #6 will consist of five duos or trios who openly engage in an experimental field. The theme and form—whether as a solo or duet with (live) music—will emerge through the collaborative process.
    Rehearsal fee: €800 gross
Performance fee: €360 gross per performance

    Application
Only individual artists residing in the state of Bremen are eligible to apply. The selection will be based on the application materials. The dialogue partners will be announced by early April 2025 at the latest. Applications are open to dancers, choreographers, audio artists, and composers. A management team comprising members of the LAFDK will select the artists and form the duos or trios. Applications must be submitted via the application portal (see below).
    Application deadline: March 1, 2025 (11:59 PM).

TanzDialoge has existed since 2020 and is a platform for artistic engagement and exchange among freelance dance artists in Bremen. Initiated and coordinated by the Tanzinitiative network of the State Association of Independent Performing Arts, the TanzDialoge have been held annually since then. During the TanzDialoge, artists come together who have never worked together before. This leads to collaborations, new encounters in the Bremen and Bremerhaven dance and art scenes, and the bundling of synergies. Different backgrounds and diverse dance languages are explored and brought into relation with each other. Each year, a different focus is set for the thematic direction. This year, the focus is on networking between established and emerging dance artists (0-3 years of professional or stage experience) in Bremen's dance scene: Five duos work together for the first time during the course of one week. During a rehearsal week, ten-minute dance pieces are created, which will be shown on November 9 and 10, 2024, at Schaulust.
Tickets are available now through rausgegangen. Remaining tickets at the box office.
    Solidarity pricing system: €7 / €10 / €15

  • Artists in the independent performing arts sector continue to work under precarious conditions. The COVID-19 pandemic has starkly exposed the inadequacy of their social security. Our research project Systemcheck has scientifically documented this lack of security.
These findings have led to steps toward improvement: As recently as June of this year, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media announced that minimum fees must be paid to artists in federal funding programs. We welcome this development, as we have been advocating for minimum fees since 2015. However, if this step is accompanied not by an increase in funding but by significant cuts, then a positive measure turns into its opposite—leading to a painful reduction in cultural offerings.
We are not only dismayed by the cuts but also deeply concerned about the future of the successful cultural education program Kultur macht stark and our structural funding program Verbindungen fördern. Crucial decisions for the continuation of both programs beyond 2026 must be made in the 2025 budget.
Their continuation is essential, as these programs provide not only vital cultural impulses but also resilient structures against anti-democratic tendencies. In rural areas, where municipal and regional funding is often insufficient, only sustainable federal structural funding can prevent entire regions from being permanently left behind.
We believe it is a grave mistake to make cuts precisely where limited resources are achieving a great deal in counteracting the growing fragmentation of society and ensuring that people remain in dialogue with one another.
We therefore support the demands of the Alliance of International Production Houses as well as the statement of INITIATIVE TANZ regarding the DanceOnEnsemble. We also endorse the demands of the Federal Cultural Funds and strongly oppose their funding cuts. We call on the government and the responsible members of the Bundestag to secure sustainable and forward-looking cultural funding that, in addition to project grants, strengthens the structures within and for the independent performing arts. Cultural education must be recognized as the investment in the future that it truly is.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the venues in Bremen came together to discuss current challenges. • Solo self-employed and hybrid workers from the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) are now invited to take part in an online survey on their economic situation and social security. The survey is the centerpiece of a study conducted by Prognos AG together with the Bundesverband Freie Darstellende Künste e. V. (BFDK) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM). The aim of the study is to use the data obtained to obtain a valid picture of the economic and social situation of solo self-employed and hybrid workers for the first time and to be able to propose concrete measures for improvement on this basis.
"We know that a lot of people in the cultural and creative industries work as solo freelancers or hybrid workers, i.e. both self-employed and employed. And we also know, not least since the coronavirus pandemic, that many of them earn little and have inadequate social security. However, we do not have reliable data for the whole population. We don't know what differences there are between the various sub-sectors. We don't know who can make a good living from their work and where improvements are absolutely necessary. And we can only improve the framework conditions with valid data," explains Dr. Olaf Arndt, Prognos.

"The image of the "poor artist" is unfortunately not at all outdated. Fees are often so tight that there is hardly anything left for reserves and pensions. Children, chronic illnesses or relatives in need of care can mean the end of a career. If we as a society care about the creative professions, then we need to take countermeasures here!" emphasizes Anna Steinkamp, Managing Director of the BFDK.

The cultural and creative industries include the architecture market, the book market, the performing arts, the design industry, the film industry, the art market, the music industry, the press market, the broadcasting industry, the software/games market and the advertising market. Solo self-employed and hybrid workers from all of these sectors are invited to take part in the survey and thus make an active contribution to shaping a more tailored social security system.

    Link to the survey

The survey runs until March 8, 2024 and takes about half an hour to complete.
